Did you know that the next French cineclub in Bristol is on 1st November?

Alliance Française de Bristol will be showing Lulu femme nue directed by Solveig Anspach with Karin Viard and Bouli Lanners.
The film is based on the BD  ( la bande-dessinée)  of the same title by Etienne Davodeau.

After a disastrous job interview, Lulu decides not to go back home, leaving her husband and three children without any explanation.
She goes off to the coast, alone, to enjoy a few days of freedom. She meets a variety of people who will help her rediscover herself.
In January 2015, the film received a nomination for best actress ath 20th Lumières Awards and the best actor nomination at the 5th Magritte Awards.
Here are what the critics wrote about the film:

Une histoire toute simple, pleine de bons sentiments, filmée au plus près de la vie, où les personnages sont en quête de l'essentiel. Marianne

Did you know that the next book club in Bath is next Thursday?

Le club de lecture is starting this Autumn ( on Thursday, 22nd October) with Marguerite Duras, Hiroshima mon amour.

In fact, Hiroshima mon amour is first of all the script of a film that Alain Resnais wanted to make at the end of the fifties. He wanted a story on the nuclear catastrophy in Hiroshima and asked Marguerite Duras to write the script, the film came out in 1959. The book was published in 1960.
Both  the film and the book are divided into 5 sections:

1. The beginning of love ( la naissance de l'amour) between the two main characters ( les deux personnages principaux), a French woman and a Japanese man. 
2. The bombing ( le bombardement) of Nevers in France and its consequences.
3. Life in Nevers during the second World War ( pendant la deuxième guerre mondiale)
4. The making of the film ( le tournage du film) on Hiroshima.
5. The demonstration ( la manifestation) against nuclear weapons ( les armes nucléaires).

The story is essentially made up of dialogues just as the one below:

LUI : Tu n'as rien vu à Hiroshima. Rien.
ELLE :J'ai tout vu. Tout... Ainsi l'hôpital je l'ai vu.J'en suis sûre. L'hôpital existe à Hiroshima. Comment aurais-je pu éviter de le voir ?
LUI : Tu n'as pas vu d'hôpital à Hiroshima. Tu n'a rien vu à Hiroshima...
ELLE : Je n'ai rien inventé.
LUI : Tu as tout inventé.
ELLE : Rien. De même que dans l'amour cette illusion existe, cette illusion de pouvoir ne jamais oublier, de même j'ai eu l'illusion devant Hiroshima que jamais je n'oublierai. De même que dans l'amour.

I am sure you know it is the rugby world cup!

Or in French la coupe du monde de rugby, but did you know that it started in 1987 and that it is the 8th world cup ( la huitième édition)?
It happens every 4 years ( tous les quatre ans), this year it is taking place in England ( en Angleterre)  and in Wales ( au Pays de Galles) and.... this afternoon, even before I have finished writing this blog France is going to play Ireland ( l'Irlande) at the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff!

The world cup starts the first round with 4 groups ( les poules A, B, C, D) we then move on to the quarter finals ( les quarts de finale) then the semi-finals ( les demi-finales) and the final ( la finale).
Today , for the BIG  match (!!) le coup d'envoi ( the start of the match) is at 4.45pm ( 16h 45) so here we go, how do we call the various positions in French?
l'ailier: the wing
l'arrière: the full back
l'avant: the forward
le pilier: the prop
le talonneur: the hooker
le demi-d'ouverture: the fly half
le demi-de mêlée: the scrum half
le buteur: the striker
And how do we score?
le but: the goal
une pénalité: a penalty
marquer un essai: to score a try
la transformation: conversion
un drop goal....
And who checks and makes decisions?
Le juge de touche: the linesman
l'arbitre: the referee

As you know September is over!

October is following on with lovely weather here in Bristol, with fog ( du brouillard ) in the morning and then beautiful sunshine ( un soleil magnifique) the rest of the day with bright red sunsets ( des couchers de soleil rouge vif ) but the temperatures are slightly on the cool side ( les températures sont fraîches).
Before letting go of September for another year, I would like to share with you Barbara' s lovely song:

Barbara is saying goodbye to her lover, she is talking of the end of Summer which has never been so beautiful, vines will have beautiful grapes. Swallows are gathering, love is floating away on the smoke of cigarettes, flowers carry the colours of Autumn and we can hear the boats in the distance but Spring will return and May will bring back vines, swallows and hopefully her lover, yes, surely he'll be back..

What event in the last 20 years has had an impact on your life?

This is what Audrey, French teacher with Alliance Française de Bristol, asked her students who were following the Summer French intensive course: so many events to choose from, the list is frighteningly long!!! A little sense of humour ( un peu de sens de l'humour) can go a long way! Read below:

Quel événement a marqué ces vingt dernières années ?
A mon avis, l’événement le plus important de ces vingt dernières années est un moment qui s’unir les gens et les inspirer de devenir meilleurs. Il cause des émotions fortes et touche tout le  monde.
Bien sûr, je décris la création de m’émission préférée : «  The Great Bristish Bake off ! »
Chaque semaine je sui s collé à l’écran avec ma colocataire de découvrir quel gâteau va s’élever et quelle tarte va avoir un fond trempé. Nous sommes outragées par le juge strict et avons beaucoup de chagrin pour le perdant. 

Le lendemain, au travail, je la discute avec mes collègues. La majorité d’eux, je connais seulement à cause de ces discussions. J’ai une autre vie sociale grâce à «  Bake Off »
Je pense que j’ai devenu une meilleure personne aussi, parce que je me mis au défi de cuire quelques recettes du programme. J’ai grandi mon palais, améliorer ma cuisine et changer m’attitude de tenter des choses difficiles ou nouveaux.
Finalement, je crois que l’effet de «  The Great Bristish Bake off ! » offre des avantages pour le monde entier parce qu’il y a beaucoup des compétitions qui sont inspirer par le spectacle. Ces événements rassemblent beaucoup d’argent pour les charités, se propagent le plaisir et permettent tout le monde de participer de créer une planète meilleure pour vivre.
Oui, à mon avis, la création de «  The Great Bristish Bake off ! » est vraiment un événement qui fait partie des manuels d’histoire.

Do you know La partie de boules by Marcel Pagnol?

We were talking about it in Bristol last week when we had our pétanque evening with our French tutors and students.
The most famous scene in the film Fanny, created by Marcel Pagnol is la partie de boules. A tram arrives in the village but the pétanque players are blocking the line as they have to measure carefully to decide which boule is nearest to le cochonnet. This is sacred, you don't interrupt une partie de boules! The tram driver and the passengers have to wait, whether they like it or not.
Le cochonnet is the small wooden ball which is the target, les boules which are nearest to le cochonnet get the points.

This scene is very entertaining and gives a real feel of life in Provence in the 1930ies ( les années 30)  with the wonderful singing accent.

Did you know that Alliance Française de Bristol is offering a French cookery workshop?

Isa has been running these French workshops for several years and they are always very popular.

She does not just show you how to cook a dish but you prepare it yourself under her supervision and guidance. The big plus is that she gives you little tricks so that this sauce or this mayonnaise which always goes wrong when you prepare it at home will never be a problem again! Here is a trick ( une astuce) for today:

L’astuce d’Isa: Comment rattraper un plat en sauce trop salé
Pas de panique, c’est bête comme chou. Éplucher une pomme de terre et l' ajouter entière au plat en cours de cuisson. La laisser mijoter dans la sauce jusqu’à complète cuisson, puis la retirer. La pomme de terre devrait avoir absorbé le surplus de sel. Et voilà, vous avez sauvé votre honneur de cuisinier/cuisinière .

Isa uses the expression: c'est bête comme chou, it means easy peasy but un chou is a cabbage......

There are quite a few expressions with a word referring to food when the meaning has no relation to the word, like:
Etre bonne pomme: to be naive, une pomme is an apple
Raconter des salades: to tell tales
Faire le poireau: to wait ages for someone, un poireau is a leak
Avoir la pêche: to be in a really good mood, une pêche is a peach
Travailler pour des prunes: to work for no result, une prune is a plum
Avoir un cœur d'artichaut: to fall in love really easily, un artichaut is an artichoke
