Did you know that the festival of Avignon finished yesterday?

Avignon is a small town in the South East ( dans le sud est)  of France in le département du Vaucluse, North ( au nord ) of Arles and Nîmes.

The popes lived in Avignon in the 14th century hence le Palais des Papes.

Le festival d'Avignon is the most important in France and can only be compared with the Edinburgh festival.
It was founded in 1947 by Jean Vilar, actor, stage manager and director, with financial help from the city of Avignon la cour d'honneur du Palais des Papes was turned into a theatre space.

Three plays were shown in 1947 for one week in early September, Shakespeare's Richard 3rd and one play by Maurice Clavel and one by Paul Claudel.
It was a real success and was repeated the following year with a group of actors under Jean Vilar's direction. As the festival became bigger, the fringe festival started ( in 1966) and was called  le festival off, still is.
Now the festival puts up plays, ballets, music, literature, poetry and exhibitions. there were 1336 shows this year with 1071 companies coming from 26 countries, the festival now lasts a whole month.
This 69th edition finished on 25th July. Follow this link to see the programme for the 25th July...

What about having another opinion on the novel Un aller simple by Didier Van Cauwelaert?

This novel encouraged a lot of discussions in Martine's French classes, it was also a lot of fun as it is a book full of humour and wit.
Here is what Pete had to say, in his own very witty way!

What about a bit of reading in French during the Summer holidays?

Martine read with her Friday morning French class as well as with her Wednesday evening French tuition group a novel by Didier Van Cauwelaert called Un aller simple. This book won the prix Goncourt in 1994.
Here is a short summary and some positive comments about the book, written by Liz:

Joan had a totally different reaction to the book:
Joan mentions an interview with  Didier Van Cauwelaert in which  he explains what it is to be a writer.

All you need to do now is read the book and decide for yourself whether it works for you to the end or whether you are disappointed like Joan.

We are hoping to run an intensive French course in August for a low intermediate level, if you think this may be for you, check on our website and contact us asap. For more info...

Did you know that the Bristol to Bordeaux bike ride finished yesterday?

The riders (les cyclistes) were raising money (récolter de l'argent) for PROPS, a Bristol based charity for young people with special needs.

The route took them through St Malo, a walled port city in Brittany (Bretagne):

Onto Nantes and La Rochelle, and then of course  Bordeaux:

And it's not for the faint hearted: at least 300 miles, and the recommended training (l'entraînement) starts 20 weeks before!

If you decide to ride your bike this summer (faire du vélo), don't forget your helmet (le casque), your bike lock (l'antivol) and your puncture kit (kit de crevaison). And of course, if you are in France, don't forget to ride on the right (rouler à droite)!

Once you are back, why not come and share your stories in French by joining one of our groups?
